Mobility in the enterprise is here to stay — be it in the form of the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), Choose Your Own Device (CYOD) or Company Owned, Personally Enabled (COPE) model. Rick Devenuti, president of the Information Intelligence Group (IIG) at EMC talks about the challenges of going mobile and how the IIG helps Asian businesses overcome these challenges.
Q: Can you share your thoughts on the 2014 technology outlook and how mobility fits into this?
Rick Devenuti: By 2015, the world's mobile worker population will reach 1.3 billion, representing 37.2 percent of the total workforce. IDC expects the Asia Pacific mobility market to continue experiencing strong growth and momentum in 2014 as companies across the mobility ecosystem adapt to meet the demands of a customer base that is expected to grow to 877.3 million by 2015.
The dilemma that organisations are facing with the decision to shift to enterprise mobility is how to navigate the transition and maximise the benefits from the transformation. As part of this shift is the movement from client/server-based "Second Platform" days to the "Third Platform" era, which is driven by the onslaught of big data, mobile, social, and cloud technologies. Companies are not only challenged with achieving a truly mobile and productive workforce, but also managing, optimising and protecting massive amounts of data.This requires access to right information anytime, anywhere and securely. Companies are expected to better define expectations for employee-owned devices to balance flexibility with confidentiality and privacy requirements. As analysts term 2014 as the year of "Choose Your Own Device"(CYOD), we believe that the success in 2014 will be largely determined by an organisation's ability to meet the requirements of the end-users as well as IT and security departments. Users need to gain the access they demand and IT needs to reduce the risk of doing so.
Organisations that readily address the security, compliance and management issues with a mobile strategy are also likely to see a marked improvement in productivity and business performance, including higher levels of efficiencies and meeting the need of third platform-enabled solutions.
