Singapore Computer Society announces IT award winners

At the SCS Gala Dinner & IT Leader Awards 2013 held last Friday (22 February 2013), five distinguished individuals were conferred the society's highest accolades for their outstanding careers and performances. The event at Shangri La Hotel was graced by Sim Ann, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Communications and Information, and Ministry of Education. The evening saw the gathering of over 900 IT professionals and representatives from the government and private sectors.

The driving force behind the implementation of the IT Leader Awards is to recognise the significant achievements and contributions of outstanding individuals in the infocomm industry so as to promote IT excellence and to advance the state of IT in Singapore, says the SCS mission statement. The society hopes that recognition of noteworthy IT luminaries will serve as an inspiration and role models for younger Infocomm professionals to reach greater heights.

This year, five distinguished individuals were conferred.

IT Leader of the Year
This year, the IT Leader of the Year goes to Yap Chee Yuen, the Executive Vice President of Corporate Services at Genting Singapore PLC and concurrently the Head of Innovation Technology at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS).

According to the citation, Yap is a visionary leader who anticipates business needs and defines IT strategies to ensure that IT investment decisions and initiatives are in sync with business objectives and priorities. Under his leadership, RWS won the National Infocomm Awards in October 2010 under the Private Sector category for the Most Innovative Use of Infocomm Technology.

In 2004, as CIO of JTC, he also led JTC to win the same Award under the Public Sector category. In September 2010, he was recognised as one of the most outstanding CIOs in the ASEAN region by IDG. He is currently the appointed Chairman for the National Information Technology Standards Council (ITSC). Under his leadership, ITSC partnered with IDA and industry members to develop various industry standards on Cloud Computing to facilitate the adoption of cloud technologies and services in Singapore and Green ICT to help organisations put in place best practices and establish processes to recycle their ICT equipment.

Hall of Fame
Wilson Tan, the Chief Executive Officer of Capital Mall Trust, has been inducted into SCS's Hall of Fame. Over the past two decades, Tan has made many contributions to the Singapore IT industry. His illustrious journey includes stints as President of Singapore Computer Society (SCS) and Chairman of Singapore Federation of Computer Industry (SFCI) – former SiTF.

During his tenure in SiTF, Tan saw to the successful merger of Microcomputer Trade Association of Singapore (MTAS) and SFCI to become the current Singapore IT Federation (SiTF). He was also a past Chairman of the National IT Standards Committee (ITSC) having served two terms as Chairman between 1998 and 2004. He was conferred the "Distinguished Award" in 2001 and "Outstanding Award" in 2005 by SPRING Singapore in recognition for his voluntary services and contributions to the Singapore National Standardisation Programme.
