What are the key traits that a CIO should have in order to thrive in today's world?
One should read — voraciously — from diverse sources, to be cued in to the megatrends affecting the industry, technology and consumers. Innovations pioneered in mature markets like the US and in Europe eventually find their way to other markets like Singapore as do societal changes and shopping behaviour. Getting a heads-up and adapting to oncoming changes before the competition is an advantage.
And as CIO for a grocery retailer, I would say that one should first and foremost also be a grocery shopper. We need to know our business, be a shopper, experience what our customers face.
It's the same in other industries. CIOs need to know the business as well as their business colleagues.
