Singapore and Japan to lead the HetNet way in Asia

In which other geographies do you see HetNets being deployed successfully?
Across Asia, many operators are at a stage where they are just starting to consider building HetNet. As a result, you will see that there are currently no large scale HetNet deployments in the region. That said, a lot of Wi-Fi hotspots are being deployed in many countries like Singapore, and we will begin experiencing the benefits of this in the near future.

What is Ruckus Wireless role in the development of technologies behind HetNets and in the HetNets being put together today, and where do you see it going in the next 12-36 months?
Ruckus contributes by providing high-performance, highly scalable Wi-Fi networking for service providers that have building HetNet in mind. Ruckus plays an active role in various industry initiatives such as the Wireless Broadband Alliance to enable the reality of Wi-Fi roaming that is as easy and secure as cellular. We foresee that there will be Wi-Fi roaming hubs or consortia being formed to facilitate Wi-Fi roaming internationally in the next 12-36 months.

How important is Singapore to Ruckus Wireless-operationally and business development-wise?
Singapore is an extremely important market for Ruckus as we consider our deployments in the country a showcase of best practices for customers across the Asia Pacific region. This applies to both our telecommunications and enterprise businesses.

Last year, Ruckus made a strategic investment in Singapore and has been operating a research & development centre since July 2013. This R&D centre develops advanced technologies enabling operators and businesses to monetise Wi-Fi networks by tracking subscribers' location information.

How does the development and deployment of HetNets figure in Ruckus Wireless' business plans for the mid to long term?
When deploying HetNet outdoors, operators face various challenges including site acquisition, power, backhaul, interference management, network management and subscriber connectivity (including discovery and authentication) for users onto the mobile network.

Ruckus is at the forefront of developing unique technologies and adopting future industry standards to mitigate such issues and challenges:-

  • Ruckus smart mesh Wi-Fi delivers robust backhaul at reduced costs, including strong none-line-of-sight capabilities.
  • Ruckus product innovation focuses on building compact, ruggedized access points that are easy to deploy and manage.
  • Ruckus patented BeamFlex adaptive antenna technology increases performance and range while providing significant interference mitigation.
  • Ruckus also focuses on timing and synchronisation from IEEE 1588v2 or NTP for traffic synchronization between Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

As part of future proofing, Ruckus Wireless also leads in the adoption of Hotspot 2.0 with its portfolio, making Wi-Fi roaming easy to use and as secure as cellular.

When do you figure HetNets will be truly pervasive across Asia, and which would you name as the geographies leading the way in its deployment and successful use?
We envision that it will take at least 12-18 months for the adoption of HetNet to be truly pervasive across Asia, with different markets adopting against different timelines. Each country has unique reasons, requirements and challenges when it comes to the deployment of HetNet. We expect Japan and Singapore to lead the adoption in the region due to the availability of backhaul (fibre), and continual mobile data usage growth driven by mobile apps, video content and cloud services.
