BAE Systems invests more than US$12 million in Malaysia

UK headquartered defence, aerospace and security provider BAE Systems will create more than 300 jobs following the establishment of its new high-tech global delivery centre in Kuala Lumpur, which is part of a  RM40 million [US$12.24 million] investment in Malaysia, it said.

Speaking in Kuala Lumpur during the recent Defence Services Asia [DSA] 2014, BAE Systems Southeast Asia managing director John Brosnan, who has been based in Malaysia since 2011, said, .'We've had a presence in Malaysia for many years and have a range of products in service with the Malaysia armed forces."

'More recently we have enjoyed significant growth development across our cyber security solutions business," said Brosnan. "Cyber security is core to our global strategy and we have already established a strong operational presence in Malaysia with more than 100 young Malaysian cyber specialists hired over the past two years.  Our aim is to grow that number of specialists to more than 300 by the time we attend DSA in 2016."

He said the company's proactive approach to partnerships is driving its future growth, which include the Typhoon multi-role fighter, and developments of existing Malaysian equipment such as Hawk, and the Malaysian Frigates, and cyber security.

These developments will give Malaysia's industry players more opportunities to develop their technological capabilities and skills, said Brosnan. "A priority for BAE Systems in Malaysia is to make sure we put the best-possible operational foundation in place to support our partnership and growth aspirations here.  To that end we have invested more than RM40 million [US$12.24 million] so far in establishing the right business infrastructure, technology and people who can deliver the best possible value and service across our Malaysian customer-base."

'Being a global company means that we can access and share world-leading aerospace, defence and cyber-security technologies with customers who have a desire and determination to develop the necessary skills and capabilities required to develop industry and drive economic growth. Malaysia is just such a customer," he said.

 Determined Malaysian government

'The Malaysian government is determined to deliver a vision for the future that demands higher technological capability, more skills and strong international partnerships," said Brosnan. "If we wish to play a fully supportive role in delivering that vision then we need to grow our position inside Malaysia both organically and through partnerships."

He said his team is already engaged in developing the industrial relationships that will create opportunities for Malaysian partners to 'get involved' in the Company's growth programme.
"As part of our commitment to further develop industrial partnerships in Malaysia we are working closely with a number of organisations across large, medium and small enterprises to establish the relationships and opportunities that will underpin our strategy going forward," said Brosnan.

"This is not a new approach for our company," he added. "Over many years in Malaysia we have built great relationships with the country's leading aerospace players such as CTRM and SME(A). The excellent range of skills and capabilities held by both of these companies is already well known to us because our relationship with them goes back to the 1990s. It was then that we began partnering on manufacturing programmes aligned to Airbus wing assemblies (CTRM) and Hawk aircraft wing pylon manufacturing (SMEA). Those partnerships have stood the test of time and today Malaysia's manufacturing skills-base, and economy, continue to benefit from those long-held partnerships."

"We are now looking to grow that position," said Brosnan. " Last year we extended the supply chain approval process linked to our Typhoon multi-role combat aircraft. This allows us to embrace even more Malaysian companies, further underlining our confidence in the nation's aerospace engineering track record in delivering components to exacting quality standards, to tight timescale and within cost requirements."

"Visitors to our stand at during the DSA week have seen, in no uncertain terms, that BAE Systems is investing heavily in delivering a world-class cyber security solutions hub which will see global cyber security solutions delivered in Malaysia, by Malaysians for Malaysia and the rest of the World.  That's the sort of partnership that delivers inspired work."
