Singaporeans fare better than others in handling phishing and identity theft risks

Singaporeans have fared better than others worldwide with regard to risks they face from phishing and various forms of identity theft.

This was according to Microsoft Corp. which released results of its third annual Microsoft Computing Safety Index.

A press statement by the vendor said 529 users in Singapore were polled by the survey.

The Singaporean sample size formed part of a larger sample size of 10,500 consumers in 20 countries with regard to their online safety behavior.

In this regard, the press statement announced the following figures in Singapore related to phishing, effects on personal reputations and identity theft as against the rest of the world.

  • 12 percent of Singaporeans surveyed said they were victims of a phishing attack, losing an average of US$ 158 or S$200
  • 8 percent of Singaporeans surveyed said their professional reputations had been compromised, costing an average of US$ 552 or S$ 700 to repair
  • 7 percent said they had suffered identity theft at an average cost of US$ 552

 

By contrast, global averages were the following:

  • 15 percent said they were victims of a phishing attack, losing an average of US$ 158
  • 13 percent said their professional reputations had been compromised, costing US$ 535 to repair
  • 9 percent said they suffered identity theft at an average cost of US$ 218

The statement said majority of Singaporeans are not exercising safer online habits even if they fared better when compared to global average figures.
