Sophos delivers synchronised security with Security Heartbeat

"Having viewed tests of the Sophos XG Firewall with a Sophos protected endpoint, I have seen how the information passed in the Security Heartbeat can reduce the risk to a business by increasing the speed of detection and response. It is not just management interface integration; the two products share valuable information, making each one more effective and efficient. For companies who do not have the luxury of extensive in-house security teams, this new approach can help bolster productivity while streamlining security operations," said Jon Oltsik, senior analyst at ESG.

"The time and resource savings [delivered by the solution] will be very compelling for the midmarket as their ability to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated threats will only become more challenging," echoed Christian Christiansen, vice president of security products at IDC.

When asked if the synchronised security — as that delivered by Security Heartbeat — could be used to secure the Internet of Things (IoT), Kraft said that it is probable but for now, enterprises could look at using web app firewalls (WAFs) to do so. "Unlike a web filter which protects the user as it fetches information from the Internet, WAF protects your server or assets as devices/users are logging into your networks. This reduces the surface area of an IoT device, which is usually not built with security in mind. Besides using WAF, businesses could look at authentication to protect themselves from the security vulnerabilities brought about by IoT devices.
